About the Artist

Anton Balanchivadze was born in Georgia, in 1978.

He is a contemporary Georgian artist working across painting, installation, and multimedia. He participates in both international and local exhibitions and projects. He graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, where his artistic language took shape through a close dialogue between personal exploration and academic tradition.

He lives and works in Tbilisi. His studio also functions, in part, as a gallery space, where works in progress and completed pieces coexist, allowing the working process to remain visible and continuous.

Balanchivadze’s work moves gradually from figuration toward a more condensed, semi-abstract visual language. Color and surface increasingly take precedence over the illusion of depth, while a strong sense of continuity connects different bodies of work. Despite formal shifts, his paintings remain immediately recognizable, unified by atmosphere, rhythm, and a consistent presence of form.

Recurring elements — celestial signs, small figures, and color-marked patches — appear throughout his work. These elements do not function narratively, but serve as points of balance within the composition. Since the mid-2000s, they have gained greater independence, existing as carefully placed signs within a deliberately preserved two-dimensional field. For Balanchivadze, mythology is not tied to a single story, but to a source from which form and meaning arise — distilled into minimal, recurring elements.

Color functions as an active force: at times atmospheric, at times direct and decisive. Deep blues, earth tones, muted golds, and small red accents form compositions in which meaning is suggested rather than explained.
