TBC Gallery, Tbilisi — May 2011

In May 2011, TBC Gallery hosted a personal exhibition by the young painter Anton Balanchivadze. The exhibition presented a wide selection of the artist’s works, many of which were created specifically for this occasion. At the time, it represented the largest exhibition of his work to date.

For this exhibition, the artist chose to work primarily with larger formats, developing paintings that responded directly to the scale and character of the exhibition space. The central theme of the show was closely connected to his personal interests and his ongoing exploration of color and light as expressive elements.

While working on the paintings presented in the exhibition, the artist discovered new visual possibilities and compositional approaches. These works marked an important stage in the development of his artistic language, bringing together narrative motifs, atmosphere, and a distinctive painterly sensitivity.

The exhibition attracted considerable interest and was warmly received by visitors.

This project also continued the collaboration between TBC Bank and Anton Balanchivadze. Prior to this exhibition, TBC Bank had commissioned a series of the artist’s miniature works, created as Christmas gifts for VIP clients. That project was highly appreciated and contributed to the continuation of this cooperation.

“Anton Balanchivadze’s painting unfolds within a fragile and introspective world where spiritual presence and earthly vulnerability coexist. His figures, often childlike and symbolic, inhabit a space shaped by quiet tension, tenderness, and inner contemplation.

Rather than narrating specific stories, the works suggest emotional states and memories. Through restrained compositions and a nuanced use of color, the paintings invite the viewer into a reflective encounter marked by uncertainty, intimacy, and subtle hope.”

GAG Exhibition in 2006 / Copalla Gallery Artists: Nino Moseshvili, Maka Batiashvili, Anton Balanchivadze and Avtandil Gurgenidze

Origins of GAG - 2005

GAG Exhibition in 2005 / Copalla Gallery

Artists: Nino Moseshvili, Maka Batiashvili, Anton Balanchivadze and Avtandil Gurgenidze

In 2004, following a visit to the Picasso Museum, the initial idea took shape during a moment of reflection in the museum courtyard —an unassuming moment that later became the starting point of the collective. Shortly after his return to Tbilisi from Paris, GAG was founded in 2005.

The newly formed collective, supported by a group of young businessmen who believed in the initiative, held its first joint exhibition at Gallery Kopala. The gallery was founded by renowned film director and distinguished cultural figure Alexander Rekhviashvili, with its activities supported by his daughter Nino Rekhviashvili. Gallery Kopala is associated with many significant exhibitions in Tbilisi, and, at the artist’s request, we would like to express our deep respect here toward Mr. Sasha.

From this first presentation onward, GAG remained active until 2007, realizing more than ten joint exhibitions across various venues, including Gallery Kopala, Arsi, Tapiri, Karvasla, Gallery 7, and others. Several projects were developed around thematic formats such as Red and Black and White.

During this period, the art café and gallery Tapiri Gallery, located on Bazaleti Street in Tbilisi, became one of the collective’s active meeting points. Alongside group exhibitions, the space hosted artist talks, public conversations, and live drawing evenings.

The entire spatial concept of Gallery Tapiri—including the furniture, walls, architectural details, and the overall treatment of columns, windows, staircases, and room proportions—was designed by Anton Balanchivadze. The furniture was produced according to specially developed sketches, structurally based on net- and mushroom-like forms. At the center of the main arch, a large spiral was carved into the wall; the arch itself was divided into two parts by a central column, creating two differently shaped passages. This architectural solution distinctly separated the gallery space from the art café, which occupied the remaining two rooms.
